    Renovation of a Residence in a 1930s Stone-Built Building – 2015

This project concerns the renovation of a 60 sq.m. ground-floor apartment located in a stone-built building dating back to the 1930s. The design approach was rooted in the desire to preserve selected traditional elements of the space, blending them harmoniously with contemporary interventions and subtle references to Japanese architecture.

Due to the limited surface area, several interior walls were removed to create a more spacious and light-filled environment. Sliding doors played a central role in the new layout, acting as transitional elements that enable flexibility and fluidity between zones.

The design faced specific ergonomic challenges: integrating a living area, a workspace along a wide corridor, a bedroom without direct access to natural light, and a linear kitchen layout required careful spatial planning and efficient use of every available square meter.

The exposure of the original stonework and bricks beneath the white plaster in the living room and bathroom, the use of cement tiles to subtly indicate previous spatial divisions, and the preservation and restoration of the main entrance door and window after 80 years were all considered fortunate and meaningful discoveries.

The ultimate goal was to create a living space that balances functionality and atmosphere, through clean forms, natural materials, and lighting strategies that support spatial flow and visual clarity.
